Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce Workforce Development
10/25/2011 -
Lara Magnusdottir, Resource & Referral Director, has been working with the Workforce Development Committee of the Santa Rosa City Chamber of Commerce for about two years. The Committee is composed of representatives from the Sonoma County business and the education communities, and is committed to supporting and ensuring a prepared and qualified workforce for Santa Rosa and Sonoma County employers. The Committee is chaired by Bob Reynolds of Innovative Business Solutions and staffed by Kelly Bass, Director of Workforce Development. One of the great accomplishments of this committee is the WHEEL program (Worksite Held Employee English Learning), where the program partners with an employer to provide English classes to their employees. Most of the employers commit to the program by scheduling the classes partly during the employees’ work hours and partly on the employees’ own time.
WHEEL worked with 4Cs to offer English classes to its English learner center staff, and after the first 8-week round of twice-weekly classes, the WHEEL program decided to finance two more 8-week rounds of classes for the teachers! In addition, the Workforce Development Committee was instrumental in adding preschool teachers to the Santa Rosa City Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Educators Breakfast.
The Committee recently partnered with Community Action Partnership of Sonoma County to administer the Employer Engagement Project, a First-5 funded program intended to Engaging Employers in Promoting Family Literacy and Family-Friendly Policies.
It has been tremendously enjoyable and informative to work with such a great group of committed individuals who understand the importance of adequately preparing both today’s and tomorrow’s workforce to ensure a thriving community.
